Apparently “solar trees” have been popping up in parking lots. These “solar trees” are in-fact solar panels mounted on poles in parking lots. They capture energy for use on the grid while providing shade for the vehicles in the parking lot. Here’s an older article on Wired that describes how Google is using solar panels in their parking lot to meet about 30% of their power requirements.

Ever wonder who’s calling you? I was curious about a number that had called me about twenty times over a 48 hour period. Upon Googling the number, I came across this great service that allows you to enter a phone number, and if others have reported it, you will see who has called you and add them to your blocked numbers list.

I guess there are people who always need to be entertained. A couple Belgians have developed a video game played by — wait for it — peeing in a urinal. That’s right, if relieving yourself is too boring, you can now virtually slalom down ski slopes or kill aliens to pass the time.

Speaking of which — does ‘away from the Internet’ anxiety kick in while commuting to work or taking the family for a drive? Well, along comes .Car. Web content delivered to your dash. Just what we need. More distractions while people drive. You know there is some good in a service like this such as finding amenities while traveling. But you also know that there is some bonehead that’s going to ram into the back of you because he’s too engaged in the great video he’s watching on YouTube.

Mashable Photoshop? “The appeal of extending one’s app with lightweight, cross-platform, network-aware widgets is so obvious that we were busy building support in my first app some eight years ago–and we had to build our own Flash Player clone to do it!” John Nack, product manager at Adobe wrote on his blog.

Tomorrow is shaping up to be a pretty busy day, so we hit the wires a day early …

You had to see this one coming. After success with the increased amount of product placement campaigns, (I’m looking your way 24, CSI and ER), NBC Universal and an ad agency are teaming up to produce shows written around products.

Dilbert has gone all Dibert2.0. That’s right, a new Flash-heavy version of the site has been launched and according to a few reports I’ve read, some of the regulars aren’t overly fond of the new digs. You can even create your own Dilbert Mash-Ups – how trendy. Next thing you know, he’ll be shedding his pocket protector.

AT&T has made claim that without serious investment in infrastructure, the Internet will reach capacity by 2010.

Speaking at a Westminster eForum on Web 2.0 this week in London, Jim Cicconi, vice president of legislative affairs for AT&T, warned that the current systems that constitute the Internet will not be able to cope with the increasing amounts of video and user-generated content being uploaded.

“The surge in online content is at the center of the most dramatic changes affecting the Internet today,” he said. “In three years’ time, 20 typical households will generate more traffic than the entire Internet today.”

And finally, here’s a pretty good article about how companies that engage their customers with [buzzword alert] 360 degree experience design [/buzzword alert] are flourishing. CEOs, CFOs, and COOs please take note of this article, your entire marketing department isn’t on crack after all. ‘Design’ is the differentiator that will separate the successful companies from the rest of the pack – more-so now than ever before.

Blendtec, a manufacturer of commercial and home blenders has developed a web site called Will it Blend to accompany its main Blendtec web site.

The web site features a number of videos reminiscent of David Letterman’s ’throwing things off a building’ shtick. Guests to the web site are asked to suggest an item to be blended. Categorized into two sections, ‘don’t try this at home’ and ‘try this at home’, the videos include an iPod, toy cars, hockey pucks and Barbie dolls being blending into a million bits.

This company has found a fun and unique way to demonstrate the USP for the product – its durability and power.

There is an adage that if you can take the product out of a commercial and you don’t miss it, it probably isn’t a very good commercial. While this campaign is fun and most certainly viral, it does a great job to showcase the product itself. Too many brands come up with extremely creative ideas that may be viral and gain a lot of exposure because of the content, but they fail to showcase the brand and persuade anyone of its usefulness.
